Turtle Hospital Tours

Join us on a morning tour to the Ballina/Byron Turtle and Seabird Hospital. This is a grass-roots community group with a passion for coastal wildlife rescue. Come and see first hand the great work undertaken in rescuing and rehabilitating marine wildlife including seabirds and sea turtles.

Come and see the marine wildlife rescue and conservation team in action at the Ballina Byron Turtle Hospital. Have you ever wondered where sick and injured wildlife found in our area go? Well this dedicated team are responsible for the rescue and rehabilitation of a wide variety of Marine animals including Turtles and Seabirds.

Each year these volunteers work with hundreds of sea turtle along the coastline of New South Wales. The North Coast branch, based in Ballina, is the home of ASRs Ballina Byron sea turtle hospital where many turtles are treated each year.

Volunteers also take part in a wide range of sea turtle conservation activities including nest identification and protection. In 2017 and 2018, we began a citizen science project called Sea turtle nest monitoring in northern New South Wales. We educate the community on many levels and regularly conduct marine debris clean-ups and social media campaigns.

The best part of their job, of course, is releasing a sea turtle that we have brought back from the brink of death. Our sea turtles are often released into the Cape Byron Marine Park.
